Sven-Goran Eriksson

Sven-Goran Eriksson joined England as National Team Coach in January 2001, on a five-year contract.

Having won the Italian League and Cup double in 2000 with Lazio, to go with an impressive record of success at clubs across Europe, he joined England as one of the top coaches in the world.

Sven Goran Eriksson's first game in charge was the 3-0 victory against Spain at Villa Park in a friendly international on 28 February 2001. Four subsequent wins in consecutive games ensured that Eriksson achieved the most successful start of any England coach.

When England produced an outstanding performance by crushing Germany 5-1 in Munich on September 1st 2001, and beating Greece on 6th October 2001, Sven Goran Eriksson earned himself a place in the hearts of the nation as he guided England to automatic qualification for the World Cup Finals in Japan / Korea in 2002.
